We are open in Bideford at St Mary’s School, Chanters Lane, Bideford, EX39 2QN,
and in Barnstaple at Orchard Vale School, Westacott Road, Whiddon Valley, Barnstaple, EX32 8QY,
from Monday 30th July to Friday 31st Aug (except Monday 27th Aug Bank holiday) from 8.30 am to 6pm. Still only £20 per day.
As we work with different schools we can only open when our base schools can be available – this means that not all schools break up at the same time. I know some schools are closing on the 20th. Again at the end of summer there will be a few days but the schools need to get back and prepare for the new term.
Booking – Please can you book through email (email@example.com) or ring the office on 01237 471972. Please note that you can cancel any booking before the holiday starts but once the holiday starts all places must be paid for.
Trips – We have a tradition that during August we go on trips on Fridays (please note we can’t take children if they are not going on the trip). These are favourite places that we have taken children to before so are tried and tested. We believe that the group discounts, coach travel and extra staff offer excellent value for a day out and don’t forget we don’t take extra money for ice creams or the shop. The prices quoted below are the total cost for the each day and includes coach, entrance and the normal club charges.
- Friday 10th Aug – Hidden Valley, a mysterious park with lots of trails and adventures including trains. £40 for the day.
- Friday 17th Aug – We the Curious (formally @Bristol), a hands on science park with one of the only 3D planetariums in the country. Not just science, as fun as that is, but also Aardman animations – so something for everyone. £43 for the day.
- Friday 24th Aug – Arlington Court, history and mud! This is our local national trust property where children remember the ‘golden carriage’, walking like a victorian lady and then getting muddy from top to toe in the wilderness. £30 for the day.
- Friday 31st Aug – Milky Way, our traditional end to the summer holidays, at the best local attraction which is still fun if rains or shines and everyone goes home tired but very happy. £38 for the day.
Staff News – We are pleased that Lara Conley has returned to North Devon and is back as playleader at CAN Play OV. Liam Cowley has completed his apprenticeship in Playwork at level 3 and Taz Sargeant is not far behind completing hers. We also have a trainee Wilhelmina Joy who is helping at CAN Play Pynes who used to come to Arts Play when she was young. We sadly say goodbye to Ke-Lee O’Sullivan who will be leaving after the summer to achieve her ambition to be a teacher and we wish her very success, but she will be missed by children, parents and colleagues.
CAN Play News – We have been asked by St George’s and St Margaret’s Schools in Northam to set up an after school club for them based at St George’s starting in September. This will mean we have five after school clubs. Please remember that if you have regular days we need these confirming before the next term starts.
Thank you parents and children for your thoughts on the clubs in the recent evaluations. It is heart-warming to hear lovely comments and a boost for the staff, but also where we can improve our service to you.
CAN News – Some of you may be aware that Athos moved to Devon to work at the Beaford Centre and Plough Arts Centre and then started CAN 24 years ago. To be more proactive, as well as running Samba Baia, he has set up a recording studio, with help from Stuart Anstis. They are recording a Samba Baia disc and starting to work with young musicians. The ground floor of our Rope Walk building has been emptied of all our resources and we have begun the process of turning it into an accessible performance, cinema and workshop space where we can run more activities.
Another development is that we now have two units on the Clovelly Road Estate which house all our resources. We want to expand this facility to become a scrap store, taking good clean resources from factories and making them available for groups and families. We will also share resources including badge makers and gazebos. More news in the Autumn.
